Jira Integration

Connect Jira to Brief to understand your work pipeline and velocity.

Last updated: November 25, 2025

Jira gives Brief understanding of your work pipeline and velocity. For teams using Atlassian, it's the primary source for understanding what you're building and how fast you ship.

What data does Brief extract from Jira?

  • Issues and Epics — What's backlogged, in progress, and shipped
  • Sprints — Sprint planning and completion data
  • Velocity Metrics — Release frequency, cycle time, throughput
  • Project Structure — How you organize work

Why should I connect Jira to Brief?

Work Pipeline

See what's being built right now vs. what's planned vs. what shipped.

Velocity Understanding

Brief calculates how fast your team ships based on sprint completion patterns.

Jira + Confluence Combo

When you connect both Jira and Confluence, Brief cross-references work items with strategy docs for complete context.

How do I set up the Jira integration?

Setup time: 30 seconds
Initial sync: 1-2 minutes
Updates: Real-time via webhooks

Steps

  1. Go to Integrations in Brief
  2. Find Jira and click Connect
  3. Authorize Brief in Atlassian's OAuth flow
  4. Select Jira site — Choose which site to connect (if you have multiple)
  5. Done! Brief starts syncing
Atlassian OAuth tokens expire every hour but automatically refresh. This is normal Atlassian behavior and shouldn't cause issues.

What if my workspace requires admin approval?

Some Atlassian workspaces require admin approval for third-party apps.

If Admin Approval Required

  1. You'll see a message during OAuth: "Admin approval required"
  2. Ask your Atlassian workspace admin to approve Brief
  3. Admin approves in: Atlassian Admin ConsoleApp ManagementPending Requests
  4. Once approved, reconnect in Brief

What Happens Next

After connecting:

  1. Initial sync — Brief fetches recent issues and sprints (1-2 minutes)
  2. Velocity analysis — Velocity agent calculates metrics
  3. Webhook registration — Brief subscribes to issue updates
  4. Continuous sync — Updates automatically as issues change

Common Issues

Why does it say "Admin approval required"?

Your Atlassian workspace requires admin approval for new apps. Ask your Atlassian admin to approve Brief in the admin console under App Management → Pending Requests.

Why does it say "Token expired"?

Atlassian OAuth tokens expire hourly but auto-refresh automatically. If issues persist after 5 minutes, disconnect and reconnect.

Why did it connect to the wrong Jira site?

You connected to the wrong Atlassian site during OAuth. Disconnect in Brief, then reconnect and select the correct Jira site.

Why aren't any issues syncing?

Your Jira site may be empty or Brief may lack permissions. Check that Brief has read access to projects in Jira settings.

How long does setup take?

Initial setup takes about 30 seconds for the OAuth flow. The initial sync takes 1-2 minutes to fetch your issues and sprints. Updates happen in real-time via webhooks.

How does Brief calculate velocity?

Brief analyzes your sprint completion patterns, issue lifecycle times, and throughput to calculate velocity metrics and understand your team's shipping capacity.

Can I connect multiple Jira sites?

Yes, select which site during OAuth. To connect a different site, disconnect the current one and reconnect with the new site.

What's Next?

Now that Jira is connected:
